Food allergy
What is coeliac disease?
The cause of coeliac disease is intolerance, that is, over-sensitivity towards the protein in flour (gluten), which results in the inability to digest food that contains flour. The effects of coeliac disease can only be eliminated with a conscious diet.
The exact cause of coeliac disease is still unknown, but it is most probably due to genetic alteration. Flour intolerance is an autoimmune disease, which means that the immune system produces a substance against itself, thus destructing its own tissues. Coeliac disease may be symptom-free in the beginning it causes weight loss and chronic diarrhea, which in turn can lead to dehydration, or the obstructed absorbance of vitamins and mineral salt. Coeliac disease may lead to the napping of the small intestine's mucous membrane or may be the cause of other organic diseases.
Identifying coeliac disease
Unfortunately sometimes flour sensitivity is very insidious: the most common kind is latent coeliac disease, which can only be detected by genetic examination. The patient may carry the illness free from symptoms for some time, so that the disease manifests later, independently of age, due to some cause functioning as incite.
Coeliac disease should be carefully watched especially during childhood: slow growth, vitamin scarcity, chronic thinness and loss of interest may all be red flags. Unfortunately, coeliac disease can have many different symptoms, the bulk of which may (also) already be the result of the atrophy of the small intestine's mucous membrane. It is not easy to recognize it, but it is even more important to take action against it immediately. Adult coeliac disease is far rarer and symptoms are much more obvious: diarrhea and herpes-like skin alteration on the back of the leg and around the waist. Quick medical examination and introducing a strict diet, however, is none the less important in case of adults.
With an individual diet plan
Those suffering from coeliac disease have to devote extra time and care to obtain the right, gluten-free products. Fortunately, products suitable for flour sensitive people are available at more and more stores, thus the much talked about strict diet is not that frightening anymore.
