Although coconut is not native in Hungary, this South-African fruit is also available fresh in our country, in markets and well-assorted groceries and on the shelves of the supermarkets, so you might even have one every day. It is reaped green in its country of origin, so that it is ripe and rich in vitamins when it reaches Hungary. When you buy coconut, choose the one in which liquid audible slops about when shaking it - this way you can be sure that the coconut's inner flesh is thick enough but not dried out during the time-consuming transport. Ripe coconut keeps its quality on room temperature for -3 weeks, but you should consider the days which it might have spent at the place of distribution.
Not only in sweets!
Although the inner flesh of the coconut is a little bit difficult to access, not impossible at all after having coconut milk, this remarkably refreshing and naturally sweet juice drain off, using a hammer and a sharp knife.
Its white, fibrous flash, slightly tasting of walnut, can be eaten - along with the inner, thin brown layer - fresh, cut into pieces, ground, dried or even as coconut grind and in a powder form, or even as coconut milk powder as appetizer or seasoning. Apart from sweets made with traditional coconut grind, you can mix raw or dried coconut into raw salads, mueslis or even for breaded fries. Coconut milk powder can be used as sweetener, aside from using it for preparing coconut milk.
Coconut: an energy explosion
Coconut is very healthy due to its high mineral substance content (mostly calcium, magnesium, zinc, selenium and iron). Regularly eating coconut effectively fights fatigue and exhaustion not only in the case of sportsmen but also for children, adults, those recovering from disease, and it also serves as an alternative to cow milk. However, coconut is not only recommended to enhance performance: it invigorates digestion, since it is rich in dietary fibers and it is also effective cure for certain intestinal diseases. As it contains, in addition, unsaturated fat, regular coconut eating also decreases the chances of heart diseases. Aside from these impacts, it also has purgative and urinative effects and cleanses the blood.
